The Summer You Died
The summer you died,
I wanted to tear my guts apart,
To take out my organs,
Rearrange them in improper order—
So l could no longer breathe,
Eat,
Sleep,
Exist.
Missing you was like missing a limb,
An arm, a leg —
An all-encompassing phantom pain,
Leaving me wretched,
Staggering through a world
That has left me wrecked.
Should I have died
In your place,
I would have been happier.
All my demented demons,
The shadows that whisper your name,
Would cease to haunt me,
And I'd find peace
In the silence of the grave.
Inspiration
I came up with the first line after watching the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJdIU3GaoQU) for this anime, The Summer Hikaru Died. The anime is of the horror genre, hence the intensity of the poem.
Process
The process was fairly simple. Stream of consciousness. As there is no formal rhyme or meter in this poem.
